Listening exercises

Introduction

These exercises are intended to develop skills in listening and appraisal and are for use with English Classical Players’ recording of Elgar's Enigma Variations.   Each track can be played as many times as are helpful for making progress and clues given where necessary.

Some of the questions are quite easy but some are extremely difficult.   The purpose is to stretch skills and to stimulate group or class discussion about what can be heard.   For an individual to get every answer exactly right would demand advanced listening skills - it is unlikely anyone not having a detailed knowledge of the score could answer every question accurately.   A worksheet with the questions is available from the downloads page.  Since some solutions are complex we would recommend that they are found from discussion with the score but an answer sheet is available on request from info@thinkofthesound.co.uk
